AAA Tom Pink Relays
In 2007 the AAA received a generous bequest from the late Alice and Lewis Pink,
to fund children’s’ activities in memory of their son who was tragically killed
in an accident in the early 1970’s. After discussions with the Pink family, the
AAA agreed to use the money to fund a series of children’s events in support of
and leading up to the 2012 Olympic Games in London.
For the past two years, successful Tom Pink winter indoor programmes for
children in the Under 11 and Under 13 age groups have been held at the EIS
Stadium in Sheffield, the NIA in Birmingham, Sportcity Manchester and the Lee
Valley Athletics Centre in London. These events, comprising a unique form of
relays and field activities, proved very popular with both the participants and
spectators.
Following discussions with England Athletics, an outdoor version of the
programme has been designed and thoroughly tested, with the object of creating a
bridge between the successful Sportshall Programmes and traditional Track and
Field. The first full outdoor programme was trialed by Cheshire Clubs at Halton
Athletic Track in early June. It proved very successful and so with the help of
Northern Athletics the AAA are presenting this invitation programme at Derby.
There are also plans to hold some of the track relays in conjunction with one or
two of England Athletics Multi-event Championships with the intention of
attracting more spectators to the venue and raising the atmosphere.
The forthcoming winter fixtures will be held at:
Lee Valley Athletics Centre, London October 2009
EIS Sheffield December 2009
NIA Birmingham February 2010
Sportcity, Manchester March 2010
Looking to the future, the AAA intend to follow up the winter programme of 2009
/ 2010 by holding a series of outdoor events in the summer of 2010 at various
venues throughout the country.
